Hello and congratulations on making it through the first two months of 2025! If you live in the Pine Tree State like we do, you know February was marked by one snow storm after another. The snow banks are over my head and when I shovel the driveway, I have to catapult the snow up onto my front lawn so it doesn’t just roll back down the massive mound of snow and land on my feet. Surprisingly, my tiny chihuahua, Fred, is a northern dog through and through, and I have to chase him around the backyard to get him to come back inside most days. Between running after him and shoveling nearly every other day, I think I can cancel my gym membership for the winter.
The Maine weather seemed to have it out for us this month - we had to cancel a rehearsal and a performance due to snow. If you were planning to come to S’more Night at Congress Square Park on the 13th, we were so sad to miss you - but don’t worry, we’re hoping to make up for it by singing there this summer! We’ll keep you updated on dates.
In other performance news, this week we announced our spring concert - save the date for May 29th, 7:30pm at One Longfellow Square! We are so excited to perform in this iconic Portland venue and show you what we’ve been working on. Tickets are available on their website for $20 advance purchase or $25 at the door. Be sure to get your tickets early! You can learn more on our website.
Another fun project we have coming up is Po(e)p-Up PortFringe - Works by Edgar Allan Poe. This Pop-up features an impressive line-up of local artists and groups, and we’re honored to be part of it this year. Stay tuned for more information about this event happening Saturday, April 5th.
With all these missed rehearsals, you may be wondering how we stay on top of learning new music, and the answer is practice tracks! Our incredible director, Rachel, makes practice tracks for each song we sing, which we use to practice our parts between rehearsals. Most songs have four practice tracks, one for each voice part - Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto 1, and Alto 2 - but some songs have even more than that. You Will Be Found has 14 individual practice tracks - that’s almost an individual track for every member of the group!
I hope you are enjoying these chilly winter days and taking time to slow down and appreciate the small things. I am trying to practice gratitude this year, and for February, I am grateful for half priced candy the day after Valentine’s Day. I will not tell you how many Reese’s Hearts I ate this month. Until next time, stay warm and enjoy the small pockets of sunshine when you can - spring flowers will be blooming before you know it!
